Non-Neutral Plasma Section
The Non-Neutral Plasma Section is engaged in experimental research and facility development in non-neutral plasma physics, with emphasis on plasma confinement, stability, transport, wave–plasma interactions, and advanced diagnostic development.
- The section’s major experimental activities are centred around the SMARTEX-C facility, dedicated to studies on long-time confinement of electron non-neutral plasma in toroidal geometry, investigation of plasma instabilities, equilibrium behaviour, and development of diagnostic techniques for plasma characterization and control.
- A new experimental facility, SMARTEX-C U, is under development to enable long-duration plasma experiments with advanced imaging-based diagnostics for detailed investigation of plasma dynamics, transport processes, instability evolution, and validation of emerging experimental concepts in non-neutral plasma research.
- In addition, a cylindrical non-neutral plasma trap setup has been established as a versatile test platform for proof-of-concept experiments, development of novel imaging diagnostics, diagnostic validation, experimental techniques, and ion plasma studies relevant to non-neutral plasma physics.
Through these activities, the section aims to advance fundamental understanding of non-neutral plasma behaviour, develop innovative experimental methodologies, and strengthen indigenous experimental capabilities for future high-impact research in plasma confinement, diagnostics, and related basic plasma science.
